What are children and young children good nutrition?

Child nutrition is based on the same fundamental principles as adult nutrition. A proper balance of diets and exercises and a conducive lifestyle are the key to adequate nutrition.


The top five food groups include grains, milk, protein, vegetables, and fruit and generally are a good starting point for any child’s diet. The portions of each food group are mainly dependent on age, genetic composition, and physical activity. There are two categories of grains: whole grains and refined grains. Whole grains are nutritious, as they include products that use the whole kernel of grain. Whole grains are oatmeal, wheat flour, and brown rice. 


Refined grains have often been milled and processed to improve shelf-life and texture. Many valuable nutritional benefits are lost in the refining process of grains, and whole grains are therefore a better choice. Cereal, tortillas, white bread, and white rice are examples of refined grains.


The vegetable group includes every vegetable or 100% vegetable juice. Vegetables, including dark-green veggies, starchy vegetables, Red and Orange vegetables, bean and peas, and other vegetables, can be raw, cooked, dehydrated, canned, whole or juiced, or mashed divided into five subcategories. 


The size of each portion depends on what subcategory it is based on the fact that some vegetables are denser and more nutritious than others. Plants are also categorized as organic, non-organic, and non-GMO in other subcategories.


All fruits, whether fresh or 100% fruit juice, are classified as fruits. Canned, frozen, dried, cleaned, or juiced fruit, maybe. Due to the high fruit sugar content, a dietary equilibrium based on age, activity levels, time of day, and gender is recommended. Fresh fruit can also be classified as organic, non-organic, and non-GMO-like vegetables.


Dairy and Protein

The protein group consists of protein sources such as meat, poultry, beans, peas, eggs, seafood, and nuts. The protein food group includes foods. Food and poultry in your child’s diet should be lean and low in fat. The dairy groups are comprised of all fluid milk products and products mainly made from milk.


Milk, yogurt, and cheese include dairy products. Dairy has been controversial in the food group in recent years and has been given greater nutrition value to many nutritionally like dairy alternatives. In this group, fortified dairy products like soy, almond, and cashew milk are also available.

Apple Slices

Fruits are an excellent addition to most lunches since they can provide some needed vitamins while also offering a bit of sugar. Apple slices are a common option for children’s lunchboxes. Since standard apples can be difficult to eat, slicing them into pieces can make it easier for your child to eat and enjoy them during lunch.


Even if your child doesn’t like to eat apples independently, you can easily add some caramel to the mix. Let your child enjoy this common mix, so they can eat some apples while having a bit of caramel. Of course, if your child doesn’t like this, you can always try another fruit instead.

Dark Chocolate

Believe it or not, your child can enjoy a bit of dark chocolate from time to time. Compared to milk chocolate, dark chocolate is a bit more bitter, but it’s better from a health perspective. Of course, this doesn’t mean you should give your child tons of dark chocolate, but adding it occasionally to the lunchbox can be nice.


You can even find some dark chocolate with liver health supplement in it. This means your child can enjoy something nice while also eating a supplement that could help their liver. If your child doesn’t like bitter tastes, they may not like dark chocolate, but it wouldn’t hurt to try it out.


Yogurt stands out as another sweet yet nice option for your child. Yogurt has some good nutrients, especially if you purchase some yogurt with fruit chunks. You also have the opportunity to give your child greek yogurt with some nuts or granola to make it into a crunchy and healthy combination during lunch.


If you plan to give your child yogurt, make sure you add an ice pack to the lunch. You never know if it will get too warm for the yogurt since bacteria can develop when it’s exposed to heat. Due to this, you should add an ice pack to the lunchbox to avoid this problem.

Trail Mix

If you don’t want to go with something cold, you can also give your child some trail mix. Trail mix stands out since it can be a healthy snack with an excellent combination of nuts, dried fruit, and other items. That way, your child can quickly go through the trail mix and eat whatever they want.


If you give your child trail mix, you should be mindful of potential peanut allergies at the school. Ensure you contact the teacher or other school officials to ensure a child won’t have an allergic reaction to the nuts to help everyone remain safe and comfortable when they go to school.

Veggies and Ranch

Vegetables are another great source of nutrients, so you may want to put some in the lunchbox. For example, some kids love carrots while others may enjoy some broccoli so that you can keep that in mind.
