Every rating that is submitted is read by a team of moderators at Rate My Professors. The site has established site guidelines to support the objective and, more significantly, to ensure that our moderating decisions are made consistently across the board, regardless of student or professor. Our moderators are specialists in our rules, and any comment that does not follow them will be removed.
Students can request a review of a comment, and it will be sent to our moderators right away. The rating will be permanently removed or restored by the moderators. Site moderators will never change or remove a rating just to make it comply with the rules.
Reviews and Ratings
Users who have taken or are presently taking a course taught by a particular professor may rate and evaluate any professor who is already listed on the site. Users can also create a listing for anyone who isn’t currently listed. A rater must rate the course and/or professor on a 1-5 scale in the categories of “overall quality” and “degree of difficulty” in order for it to be posted.
The rater may also share whether or not he or she would take the professor again, whether or not the class was taken for credit, whether or not attendance was required, whether or not the textbook was used, and what grade he or she received in the course; additionally, the rater may include up to 350 character comments. In addition, raters may choose up to three tags (from a list of twenty) to describe the lecturer.
“A professor’s Overall Quality rating should represent how well a professor teaches the course material, and how helpful he/she is both inside and outside the classroom,” according to the website’s support page. The professor’s Overall Quality grade determines whether his or her name is accompanied by a smiling face (“Good Quality”), a frowny face (“Poor Quality”), or an expressionless face in the middle (“Average Quality”).
