The best football teams in history aren’t necessarily the most successful, but they can certainly make for great stories. Here are the top three teams for all-time: the New York Jets, the St Louis Rams, and the Liverpool team. We also list the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders. Which team would you like to see in the top three? Let us know in the comments! And don’t forget to vote for the best players!
St Louis Rams
The St. Louis Rams were a team from St. Louis, Missouri. They played their home games at the Dome at America’s Center. The team was founded in 1960 and played until the 1987 season. They were a perennial contender in the NFC, but were left out of the expansion draft in 1995 and were unsuccessful in securing the franchise. The team was finally relocated to Los Angeles and is now the second-winningest franchise in NFL history.
The Rams’ initial seasons in St. Louis were uneven, with a 4-12 record in 1998. But in 1999, the Rams’ offense went on an incredible run. They were led by unheralded former backup quarterback Kurt Warner, who led a potent offense that averaged 523 points per season. The team fielded five NFL Hall of Fame candidates, including Marshall Faulk, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this summer.
When it comes to a treble, Manchester United and Liverpool are among the top three. Manchester United won the league title with five games to spare in the 2006/07 season, and Liverpool came from behind to win the Champions League late in the season. They were the only teams to win three trebles, but that doesn’t make them unbeatable. Manchester United had some amazing players, including Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney.
As the most successful team in English football, Liverpool has been around for decades. The club was not as dominant in the 1990s, but in 2015, Jurgen Klopp arrived and led Liverpool to back-to-back Champions League finals. Since then, Liverpool have competed with Manchester City in domestic competitions and in Europe, and many people think they’re better than them. But, is that enough?
The 1976 Oakland Raiders were one of the most dominant teams in NFL history. Led by quarterback Ken Stabler and two legendary receivers, the Raiders went 16-1, winning the AFC West and the Super Bowl. With Hall of Famers Cliff Branch and Ken Stabler at quarterback, the Raiders’ receiving corps was a powerhouse, with 10 players making the All-Pro team.
In 2013, the team was 4-12, finishing last in the NFC West. In Week 9, the Raiders fell to the Eagles. Nick Foles threw a career-high seven touchdowns. The Raiders gave up 56 points in Week 15 to the Chiefs. Their playoff hopes were over after that. A season later, the Raiders clinched their division by winning two games and finishing fourth in the NFC West.
San Francisco 49ers
When the San Francisco 49ers entered the NFL, they were a middling team that only reached the playoffs three times during the 1950s. However, the new ownership changed all of that. Edward J. DeBartolo, who bought the team in 1977, was committed to turning it into a powerhouse, and he hired Bill Walsh as head coach. With his savvy and determination, the 49ers became one of the NFL’s top powerhouses.
After a rough season in 1988, the 49ers made their first playoff appearance since 2002. The team beat the New York Giants in the NFC championship game and returned to the Super Bowl for the first time in 18 years. Unfortunately, they were defeated by the Baltimore Ravens in the Super Bowl, which was held in Chicago. Regardless, they finished their season at 10-6. This year, they made it to their third consecutive NFC championship game, but fell to division rival Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship.
New England Patriots
The New England Patriots are one of the most successful and decorated teams in NFL history. The 2007 season saw the Patriots win all 18 games and finish just one win shy of their first undefeated season since 1972. With that record, the Patriots are the highest ranked team in Elo history. Throughout this period, they have a combined total of 63 wins and are considered one of the best teams in NFL history.
In 2004, the Patriots won Super Bowl XXXIX against the Philadelphia Eagles. That season, the Patriots were only one game away from being unbeaten after the suspension due to Deflategate. Despite missing the first month of the season, the Patriots were 3-1 in those games without Brady. Their average margin of victory was 16 points. With a top-ranked defense, the Patriots cut through the league like a buzzsaw.
